The competitive dance industry largely consists of competition production companies—also sometimes called dance competition companies and dance competition lines—that conduct regional competitions at stops along their annual, nationwide tours. Dancers who compete at these regional competitions are students ranging in age from approximately four to eighteen years old. Dance schools (often referred to as dance studios) arrange for their lines/classes to compete. Advanced dancers may be chosen to compete with solos, duets, trios, or small group routines. Competitions typically begin in January and end in July or August. Just in time for the next season to begin.
Dancers must continuously train to maintain and improve their technique, balance skills, strength and flexibility. Except for holidays and short breaks during the summer, competitive dancing is typically a year-round activity. Dancers attend classes during competition season to watch, learn and grow in their love of dance.
After months of practicing and perfecting all of the choreography the dancers have mastered. For the many dance
conventions and regional competitions for lines, solos, duets/trios nationals is a ceremony of excellence in the
dance community at a national level.
Every other year the studio will travel to compete at an all-studio competition. On off years, there's still an opportunity
for dancers to compete at a national level in small groups and special dances. Information will be given to dancers
who will be required to travel.
